Harold Pinter won the Nobel Prize 2005

In the end the winner surprised everyone. Harold Pinter, the British playwright and fierce critic of the Iraq War, of Israel and that nation's treatment of Palestinians, took the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature ahead of the bookmaker's favorites - Syrian poet Adonis and Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk.
One of the most influential British playwrights of his generation, Pinter in recent years he has turned his acerbic eye on the United States and the war in Iraq.He has been an outspoken critic of British Prime Minister Tony Blair and vehemently opposed Britain's involvement in the war. He told the BBC in an interview in February that that he would continue writing poems but was taking a break from plays."My energies are going in different directions, certainly into poetry," he said.
Pinter has also written screenplays, including "The French Lieutenant's Woman" in 1981 from the John Fowles novel, as well as "The Accident," "The Servant" and "The Go-Between." He was nominated for the oscar (Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium) for two times; one was his semi-auto biography film "Betrayal" 1983--it was adobted from his own play with the same name. and the second with "The French Lieutenant's Woman" 1981, based on the famous novel by J. Fowles (he was nominated for the both in BAFTA & Golden Globes). he won the BAFTA (best screenplay)2 times for "The Go-Between"1970 & "The Pumpkin Eater"1964.
He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1996 (1995 season) for the Special Award for his lifetime achievement to the theatre.
Won Broadway's 1967 Tony Award as author of Best Play winner "The Homecoming." He has also received three other Tony nominations: twice as author of a Best Play nominee, in 1962 for "The Caretaker" and in 1972 for "Old Times," and once as Best Director (Dramatic), in 1969 for "The Man in the Glass Booth."
