Steven Spielberg is nothing if not ambitious. With Munich, his epic drama about the aftermath of the 1972 Israeli hostage crisis at the summer Olympics, he grapples with the Jewish soul and the limits of revenge, the ramifications of killing another human and the personal toll of obsession. Oh, yeah, and terrorism, collateral damage, Palestine and the Mossad.

Something's gotta give, and it turns out to be dramatic intimacy.

The face of the movie, an Israeli hit squad leader named Avner (Eric Bana), is also supposed to be its social conscience, the man who wonders whether a policy of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth will leave everyone blind and toothless. But Avner gets a bit lost in Mr. Spielberg's shuffle. You see his dilemma, and you appreciate it. But you never really feel it. The characters who have the most to lose in Munich often seem dwarfed by their surroundings.
